Speak up for Safety: Skills Training for New Nurses
(Combined online and classroom course)
Summary: ONF was awarded a State Innovation Grant by Oregon’s Addictions and Mental Health Division (AMH) to develop an education program focused on improving nurse response to workplace concerns to a peer’s behavior or performance, potentially related to substance use that blends online learning with classroom practice and discussion. The education program includes two components: (1) an online asynchronous (self-directed and self-paced) scenario-based eLearning module and (2) a one-hour classroom session where students can ask questions about the content then break into small groups and apply/practice the new skills while receiving immediate feedback and coaching from trained nurse faculty. ONF provides training and useful resources to nurse faculty to prepare for facilitating the classroom activity part of the program. The education program is available to all interested schools of nursing.
