Smith Education Scholarship

Purpose

The Smith Education Scholarship was established through the estate of Milton F. Smith of Roseburg, Oregon. The scholarship is administered by the Oregon Nurses Foundation (ONF) in collaborative partnership with the Oregon Nurses Association (ONA) Cabinet on Education.

Award(s) is made to individual(s) for costs of completing a baccalaureate undergraduate, RN-BSN or graduate nursing program, including tuition, fees and other expenses directly related to participating in the education program. ONA staff members are not eligible for scholarship consideration.

Eligibility & Selection Criteria

  1. Actively enrolled (currently taking core nursing courses) in an accredited baccalaureate, RN-BSN or graduate nursing program. The program must be accredited by a national nursing accreditation organization recognized by the United States Department of Education.
  2. The critical elements of the application are:
  • Career plans in nursing (30%)
  • Leadership abilities and experiences (25%)
  • Demonstrated involvement in diversity, equity or inclusion activities (25%)
  • Demonstrated need (15%)
  • Geographic location (5%)

Amount of the Award

One non-renewable scholarship will be awarded annually for $5,000. Applicants are invited to reapply annually. As with all scholarships, the award will be sent directly to the educational institution for application towards tuition, fees, and other educational expenses.

Application

All applications must be received via email to the Oregon Nurses Foundation by May 1 of each year. All supporting documentation must be provided with the application; failure to submit all requested documentation will disqualify the applicant.

Documents for a Complete Application:

  • Typed and completed application.
  • OFFICIAL transcripts with at least one term of core nursing curriculum grades submitted directly to ONF
  • Three (3) letters of recommendation along with and electronic reference form submitted directly to ONF from referencer. Instructions on this part is available in the reference section of this form.

Application and Timelines

  • March 1 – May 1: Applications are available online.
  • May 1: Applications must be received by the ONF electronically.
  • May 2 – May 31: Applications are reviewed by the ONF Scholarship Committee.
  • July 30: Awards are announced.
  • Fall: Funds are transmitted to the educational institution at the beginning of the term.

Applications must be submitted by end of day May 1, 2024.
